We’ll start by looking at the overall keyword strategy. If your keyword is “watches”, then you are going to find that there is a tone of competition for that word. I simple search on WBSE (world’s biggest search engine) brings back 186 million listings. If you try to compete in that market, you will get slaughtered.
If we refine the search and look for “diver’s watches” we get back 267,000 listings. This is much better than the first search but still offers way too much competition. You really want to find a long tail keyword of high value that has low competition. I usually look for niche keywords in the 60,000 to 120,000 listings range.
When I perform a search for “authentic divers watch with genuine crystal”, the search results list 74,100 entries. So, if you look at the top 20 websites for this search, and analyze their keywords, you will get a good understanding of what is being used to obtain the ranking.
Now, you’ve created your website and you are ready to get going. The first thing you must do is make sure that you use your primary keyword in the title of the site. So in the code section of the site, you would enter something like – “ABC Diver’s Watches | Authentic Diver’s Watches with Genuine Crystal”. This is the number one factor for your site. Nothing else comes close. You absolutely must make your site title congruous with your keyword theme.
Having done that, you would next include pictures and solid quality text that talks about and displays the watches that fit into this category. This is another dead zone for newbies. Often people drop off at this point because they just can’t find or create good quality content to put on the site. It’s going to take a bit of research, but there is lots of material available out there. I would say you just need to focus on this aspect until you have it. The worst possible thing you can do is to try to market your site before it is ready.
Remember to use the keywords in your list to embed into your text. Use keyword tools that are available as plugins for some of the common browsers. They will tell you want your keyword density is. You are looking for 1.5% to 2% keyword density for keyword phrases of four or more words, and 3% to 5% for single keywords.
Make sure that your content is relevant to your site name and title as well. Nothing annoys the search engine bots more than a site with low relevancy. If the domain is “bobs-dominos.com” and the content is all about poker, then the bots are not going to like you much. Another thing to remember is to make sure that your niche product is something that is legal in America! There are many things that the search engines will filter out if it involves illegal or banned subject material.
As a rule of thumb, I like to embed my keywords three to five times per page. Most people reading the text would never notice the embedding. But it is necessary to get and keep the attention of the bots.
